Description

Amos 'n' Andy
Volume 8

Amos ’n’ Andy from 1943 to 1955 was not the same show it had been back in its heyday. Even with the time and format change to a thirty minute situation comedy and the addition of a full cast, however, Amos ’n’ Andy showed an improvement in ratings. The audience had in a way fallen in love all over again with the show for different reasons. A move from NBC to CBS in 1948 did not cost it its audience, nor had the almost complete altering of the show as a whole. Amos ’n’ Andy would continue in its thirty minute format ultimately until the end of the radio show era in 1955.

1948 was another year of change for Amos ’n’ Andy. The show’s creators, Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll, sold the series and all that went with it to CBS for just over two million dollars. This was at a time when CBS was essentially taking the best programs NBC had to build up its own brand. Joining a lineup on CBS that included Jack Benny and Red Skelton, Amos ’n’ Andy moved to Sunday nights and became exactly what CBS head William Paley wanted - a hit for his network. In the early 1950s, the program became a major seller of CBS televisions and radios and even found its way from radio to television briefly.

Many conventions now familiar to audiences who watch situation comedies came to be or at least matured on Amos ’n’ Andy. Although having an adversarial mother-in-law was nothing new, the addition of Sapphire Stevens’ mother to take on the Kingfish brought that character archetype to a whole new level. Amanda Randolph, the actress playing Mamma, brought as much stubbornness and downright meanness into play as she could muster, intent on making the Kingfish’s life as miserable as possible. Also, the way Kingfish took advantage of Andy’s gullibility lifted that particular concept in situation comedy to hilarious new highs.

Restored to sparkling audio quality, Amos 'n' Andy, Volume 8 clearly shows the enduring humor and impact this series had on America, then and now.
