Description

Amos 'n' Andy
Volume 9

During the years as a situation comedy program there were more characters and a number of new friends and acquaintances for the lead characters. Shorty the Barber, known for his stuttering lines and succinct summaries, became a regular, and Miss Genevieve, the cab company secretary, became a fully developed character. A new catchphrase grew up around Genevieve as Andy became known for often saying, “Buzz me, Miz Blue.”

Amos’ daughter, Arbadella gained her own voice as an integral part of the Amos ‘n’ Andy Christmas program, a noted recurring tradition beginning in 1942. The lawyer Stonewall also became a part of the show, delivering lines quickly and with a wit that kept Andy on his toes. The Kingfish’s long suffering wife Sapphire also came to life in 1943, proving that she could go toe to toe with her husband better than anyone else. And of course, with Sapphire came a thorn in Kingfish’s side-his mother-in-law, Mamma.

Although the show was called Amos ‘n’ Andy, the two title characters took a step back after 1943, allowing a once minor cast member to move to center stage. George “Kingfish” Stevens never saw a dollar bill he didn’t want and hatched numerous schemes to put money in his pocket where he felt it belonged. These schemes, usually involved Andy in a way that, if they fell apart, Andy would be left holding all the bags and Kingfish would come out clean. This essentially became the formula and the audience didn’t seem to mind.

Restored to the sparkling audio quality, Amos 'n' Andy, Volume 9 clearly shows the enduring humor and positive impact this series had on America, then and now.
