Dr. Christian

Gale Gordon, Rosemary De Camp, and Jean Hersholt at a "Dr. Chistian" broadcast, circa 1938.An underrated and long-running family series, "Dr. Christian" comes across today more as a quiet anthology of small-town life than as a straight medical drama, bringing the people of the small town of River's End to life through the eyes of the kindly Dr. Paul Christian. As portrayed by actor Jean Hersholt, Dr. Christian can perhaps best be described as a male Molly Goldberg with a medical degree; a gentle and well-meaning meddler who always manages to lead you in the right direction...whether you want to be led there or not.

The series is loosely based on the life of a real man -- or, rather, on the media-manufactured image of the life of a real man. Dr. Allen Roy Dafoe was a small-town Canadian obstetrician who gained worldwide fame when he attended the birth of Elzire and Olivia Dionne's identical quintuplet daughters -- and was quick to capitalize on his fame. In 1936, Dafoe's story became "The Country Doctor," a successful film for 20th Century Fox, and Jean Hersholt - a Danish character actor of moderate success - was cast in the title role. The following year, Hersholt brought the same characterization to radio as "Dr. Christian."

The series involved Christian and his nurse Judy Price in a wide range of situations in the lives of Rivers' End residents -- family crises, ill-starred romances, social or ethical dilemmas. The programs were given a polished production by the CBS Hollywood team and became closely associated with its longtime sponsor: the Cheseborough Manufacturing Company, makers of Vaseline.

While the ethics of the real Dr. Dafoe in exploiting his connection to the quintuplets have been seriously challenged, Jean Hersholt himself went on to earn a lifelong reputation for kindness and generosity, capped by his founding of the Motion Picture Relief Fund, which to this day provides a wide variety of medical and insurance services for the elderly of the entertainment industry. In his honor, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents the annual Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Here's your chance to experience "Dr. Christian" from its beginning in this collection of the series' first twelve episodes, broadcast in the fall and winter of 1937 -- all in crystal-clear fully restored audio.

5 of 5 Top Sound, Bargain Prices May 20, 2022
Reviewer: Bob Fells
The Archives continue to offer some incredible shows in top sound and always at bargain prices. You may recall that my tastes in OTR are a bit eclectic and I tend to favor really 'old' OTR from the 30s or at most from the early 40s. I know that kind of vintage material is difficult to come by, especially in any sort of decent sound.

I feel like a 66 year old kid listening to my favorite radio programs. I so enjoy listening to your CDs when I walk my dog -- also listen in the car and in the kitchen while cooking and doing other activities.

5 of 5 You Have Spoiled Me May 20, 2022
Reviewer: John Evans
I have to say that you have spoiled me when it comes to old-time radio. If I try to order some shows from another source - perhaps a series that is not currently available through Radio Archives - I live to regret it. The sound quality is clearly inferior to what I can purchase through you. Keep us the good work.

5 of 5 The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award May 20, 2022
Reviewer: Richard McLeod from RIVERSIDE, CA United States
"Dr. Christian" played by the noted Hollywood Actor, Jean Hersholt is one of the best Radio Show's ever aired.  It certainly had a long enough run, and was so successful, that Jean Hersholt became known to the public as Dr. Paul Christian.

Although he made many silent and talking pictures, including the starring role in Erich von Stroheim's silent masterpiece "Greed", which is probably his best known film aside from "Heidi" with Shirley Temple.

His Awards and Humanitarian efforts with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood are too numerous to mention here, but the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is still given at the Academy Awards.  All of his charm and superb acting abilities are evident in this quite touching and well written Radio series.
