In one brain, and in one mad will to destroy, lies the menace that would take the life of G-8, the Master Spy — and grind to powdered dust his countrymen! The fingers of fire are hungry for lives, and so is the fiend who gave birth to the flames! Sky Soldiers no longer roam the skies, for the skies have tamed to red, and the raging Hell exists both upon and above the Earth! It was G-8’s job to fight both men and fire and there is high adventure as he defies the very Flames of Hell!
Many of the threats faced by G-8 seemed to be drawn not only from possibly author Robert J. Hogan’s own nightmares, but from other tales of horror of all types. Monsters and beings like no other filled the skies. A particular theme, however, that recurs regularly in Hogan’s G-8 stories was that of the undead, either zombies or ghosts or some sort of corpse that just simply didn’t stay dead.
It could be believed that this was simply an easy convention for Hogan to use. Need a monstrous army? Revive dead soldiers. It also, however, could have to do with the fact that Hogan chose to set G-8 in World War One, a conflict that truly was believed to be the war to end all wars, and one Hogan served in, although never seeing combat. It is not hard to suspect that with the specter of death hanging over the world from the Great War that Hogan might not have been compelled to have G-8 face death at the hands of the undead, showing that the Flying Spy could truly handle anything.
