Authors contributing to the Pulp Magazines in the early 20th Century often found themselves writing across multiple genres and even using house and pen names. This is most definitely true of stories in the 170-issue run of The Phantom Detective that mention the title character. Although it’s unclear who wrote every story, several notable names in fiction, especially in Pulp Fiction, took their turn at writing the adventures of Thrilling’s leading Pulp Hero. Paul Ernst, more well known for his contributions to another popular Pulp hero, wrote some of the Phantom Detective pulp novels. He is best remembered, however, for the other Pulp hero. Ernst wrote the first 24 Avenger novels featuring Street & Smith’s ashen faced crime fighter and his team. Many of the characteristics fan associate with Richard Benson, the Avenger, are credited to Ernst.
Ernst also created one of the oddest villains in Pulp history, one who carried his own series of stories. Doctor Satan was a criminal mastermind who were a devil’s costume and who may have actually been either connected to the Devil himself or just a very clever or perhaps crazy criminal genius. Even though this is a bit of weirdness that does not make it into Ernst’s Phantom Detective work, his Doctor Satan stories showcase his versatility as a writer. Able to effectively write any story essentially laid before him, Ernst’s contributions to The Phantom Detective are considered solid.
Servant of Satan was originally published in the March 1949 issue of The Phantom Detective Magazine and is read with pulse pounding intensity by award winning voice actor Milton Bagby.
