Stolen silk! For the sake of the vast profits in its shimmering folds, men kill wantonly — spreading terror in a ruthless reign of gory crime! Follow Dan Fowler, special agent on a man-hunt of grisly thrills!
In July 1935, the Department of Investigation led by J. Edgar Hoover became the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In October 1935 G-Men Magazine debuted featuring Dan Fowler G-Man as its lead. This was no coincidence, regardless if you believe that Hoover himself engineered the beginning of the magazine and actually approved each story, as stated in the pulp, or if the publishers simply saw an opportunity. The birth of today’s F.B.I. and the debut of the first and best known Pulp G-Man are tied together forever, just by sharing the same year alone.
Dan Fowler was a character bound to come along naturally as people became more and more fascinated with the Department of Investigation, J. Edgar Hoover’s organization of lawmen who vowed to and in most cases succeeded at taking on the worst criminals of the early Twentieth Century. He was a man who could and often took the fight to the crooks on his own, but he also had the benefit that many pulp heroes enjoyed. Fowler was part of a mobile F.B.I. team, able to go anywhere they needed to to handle the cases Hoover gave them. And Fowler wasn’t alone, with fellow agent Larry Kendal often at his side and Sally Vane helping as well, proving herself to be more than just a token female character. So, in Dan Fowler stories, readers found both a typical Pulp hero and one molded in the image Hoover wanted everyone to see.
Milton Bagby breathes life into the F.B.I.’s most relentless and skilled manhunter, Dan Fowler G-Man in the thrilling tale Bring ‘Em Back Dead! Originally published in the November 1935 issue of G-Men!
