Some radio scholars identify The Whistler as the first storyteller of his kind on the radio. Even though he was preceded by The Shadow by about ten years, The Whistler had an all knowing aspect to him, while The Shadow and other more normal hosts of such shows had not had to that point. Also, The Whistler was less a bookend host and more of a passive observer, often bordering on seemingly being a participant, simply because of the irony laced, sometimes humorous and always on point comments he would make throughout the program. The Whistler, as a character, showed maturity in the storyteller that other shows would go on to copy.

Because of this and several other innovative aspects of the program, The Whistler proved so popular that in 1946, a CBS owned radio station, WBBM, started its own version of the famous series. Even though this run of The Whistler did not have Hollywood or “Whistler’s Children” at its disposal, it did make great use of local actors and actresses, drawing from a large repertory company in Chicago. Everett Clarke filled the role of The Whistler on this program, sponsored by Meister Brau beer. This connected it to the West Coast show, as Clarke also at times acted as The Whistler in the show’s original incarnation as well.

In full total, 692 episodes of The Whistler were produced. Approximately more than 400 have survived, meaning a majority of the series is still in existence. This is interesting because fans can truly experience the chills and thrills as listeners did originally.

Radio Archives has to be one of the very best small businesses online. We have not listened to volume 11 of The Whistler yet but, as always, The Whistler will be a great collection of stories.
