“High adventure in the wild, vast reaches of space! Missions of daring in the name of interplanetary justice! Travel into the future with Buzz Corry, commander-in-chief of the Space Patrol!”
“Space Patrol” focused on Buzz Corry, the leader of an intergalactic police force keeping The United Planets safe in the Thirtieth century. Even though Buzz and his crew protected the people and planets of Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus, the Space Patrol made its base on Terra, a manmade planet dedicated specifically, it seems, to provide headquarters for the Patrol.
Although Corry, played by Ed Kemmer, was the series’ main hero, another officer in the Space Patrol proved almost as popular as he did. Cadet Happy, portrayed by Lyn Osborn, in many ways was just another in the long line of young sidekicks playing an intentional second fiddle to the lead. Fully equipped with his own catchphrase, ‘Smokin’ Rockets!’, Happy often provided the exclamation needed for Buzz to explain something or signal trouble on the horizon. This, though, didn’t account for his popularity nearly as much as Osborn’s ability to skillfully play the young hero worshipping sidekick better than most. Whether on television with his over the top facial expressions or on the radio with similar shifts in his voice, the actor played the exuberance and sometimes naivete of Happy full tilt, truly giving fans a character they could enjoy, laugh at, and even identify with.
Ken Mayer, a noted character actor in movies and television, played Security Chief Major ‘Robbie’ Robertson’, essentially providing the muscle when necessary for the Patrol. Also along for the galactic ride was Carol Karlyle, played by Virginia Hewitt. The daughter of the Unite Planets’ Secretary General, Carol carried a sun sized torch for Buzz, a love that largely went unrequited.
