Out of the night comes a menacing winged figure! Blind district attorney Tony Quinn takes his battle for justice from the courtrooms to the streets, battling evil as The Black Bat!
When a mysterious jail break takes place and a fortune in bank loot vanishes, Tony Quinn adds two and two together — and then comes up with an answer in millions! The Black Bat and his aides battle to stem the rising tide of crime!
Although a Pulp hero, The Black Bat has definite characteristics that lend him to being more superhero than masked vigilante. The most notable of these is that Quinn has the ability to see plainly in the dark as well as in the light, thanks to the experimental eye transplant surgery he received after being stricken blind by acid thrown in his face. Along with that, he developed his other senses to a near superhuman level to compensate for being blind prior to the surgery. Also, he wore a mask and suit more like characters in comic books would sport to perform heroics than, say, Doc Savage and even The Shadow. He also had a secret passage in his home, leading to a gate house that he often used for various reasons, most notably to leave unnoticed from as The Black Bat.
Tony Quinn’s alter ego definitely had quite a bit in common with superheroes, but his place as a Pulp hero is also just as easily secured. Just like many of his fictional contemporaries, Tony Quinn was a man of unshakable morality who found himself making a decision to carry his personal crusade against crime to another level. He surrounded himself with a supporting cast of characters that acted as a team in every one of his adventures and he also, like many Pulp heroes, helped the police while also being pursued by them. Pulp or super, The Black Bat tales proved he was most definitely above all else a hero.
