Documents valued at over a million dollars are the tempting bait that lures vicious criminal overlords to defy the sleuthing skill and battling power of the world-famed Phantom Detective!
The author credited with the first eleven pulp novels featuring The Phantom Detective was G. Wayman Jones. Even though various authors wrote under that byline, most of the eleven tales were penned by D’Arcy Lyndon Champion. D. L. Champion is considered by many to be both one of the best and most underappreciated pulp fiction writers of the Pulp magazine era. Working first as a sailor and soldier, Champion used his real-life experiences for future works in pulp magazines. One of the reasons Champion is not recognized as much as others might be is that he often wrote under pen names of his own choosing or house names in his early career. Even though he didn’t get credit in the byline for himself, Champion wrote volumes of stories yearly during his Pulp career, making him extremely prolific.
In the late 1930s, Champion wrote more under his own name and created several unique characters. Inspector Ahloff was a top New York detective who, due to a mishap in an investigation, lost his legs and becomes an embittered soul. Champion also crated such memorable characters as Rex Sackler, a penny pinching private eye and Mariano Mercado, a hypochondriac. Although none of these challenges made their way into the character of The Phantom Detective, many fans credit Champion for imbuing the character with the sense of humanity and fallibility that proved to be a hallmark of The Phantom Detective during his nearly twenty year run.
The Manuscript Murders was originally published in the April 1945 issue of The Phantom Detective Magazine and is read with pulse pounding intensity by award winning voice actor Milton Bagby.
