Many authors left their mark on The Phantom Detective, which was easy to do given the character’s nearly twenty-year history in his own magazine. Although it may be said that most of the authors played by the book, as it were, in their writing of the character, that is they kept to the formula established by writers before them, some left their own marks on the tales. One such author, according to some fans and experts, was Lawrence Donovan.
An interesting aspect of Donovan’s life as a Pulp writer was his age when writing for the Pulps. While most authors that found their ways into the magazines were young men, Donovan, born in 1885, was senior to many of his peers, writing for the pulp magazines in his fifties and into his sixties. This along with beginning his career as a reporter and editor for newspapers informed much of the reality and often hard-boiled aspects of his stories. According to many, he lived the rough and tumble life many newspapermen did, drinking and taking chances, some that may have affected his career. Finding his way into the Pulps in 1929, Donovan wrote for multiple titles, like most pulp writers. Over the years, he acted largely as a back-story filler in magazines such as The Shadow and Doc Savage, among others. He worked under multiple pen names and, like most pulp authors, navigated his way through most genres, finding himself writing The Phantom Detective along the way.
