The program was titled The Line Up, but this police procedural was more than just its opening hook. Although almost all the shows opened with Lieutenant Guthrie leading someone into the room to pick out a bad guy from a seemingly unending supply, the strength of the show itself rested on its following of the case from beginning to end, paying attention to the facts themselves, but also to the characters solving the crimes.

The Line Up did not claim to be telling true stories or snatching tales from police files as other shows proudly did, but scripts weren’t wholly fiction. From the show’s beginnings and with the encouragement of its creator, Elliot Lewis, writers often went with officers on patrol, walking a beat or riding along with policemen as they answered calls throughout their city. They attended lineups to capture the authenticity, the almost claustrophobic tightness of the moment. These experiences, combined with extensive research of cases covered by the newspapers and the occasional cribbing from San Francisco police files, contributed greatly to the gritty reality The Line Up is known for. Fiction and fact collided in many episodes, truth often mixing with the writers’ imaginations to produce top quality drama.

Unlike many of its contemporaries which focused on the crimes more than the characters, The Line Up went out of its way to humanize the policemen it portrayed, particularly Lieutenant Guthrie and his first lead, Sergeant Grebb. Veterans of the force, Guthrie and Grebb were partners and friends, and yet still had their own distinct traits. Guthrie balanced facts and instinct while Grebb often went with his gut. Guthrie came into cases cool and collected, while Grebb often wore his emotions on his sleeve. Uniquely, this led to Grebb finding himself in danger or even injured more than Guthrie.
