“I am the Whistler and I know many things, for I walk by night. I know many strange tales hidden in the hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows. Yes, I know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak!”

Widely recognized as a West Coast show sponsored by Signal Oil, The Whistler actually had two short national runs in the 1940s. Due to Signal Oil only being a West Coast product, each attempt to spread the show across the country meant a different sponsor backing it. As a fill in replacement for The Jack Carson Show, The Whistler first tried to terrify the East Coast from July to late September of 1946, sponsored by Campbell Soups. A seemingly more successful attempt was sponsored by Household Finance from March 1947 to September 1948.

One theory about The Whistler not taking off according to some sources was the difficulty in classifying what type of show it was. For some listeners, it was an anthology program, while others saw it as a mystery show or even a horror program. Even though it never made an impact countrywide, The Whistler remained an extremely popular West Coast show, always sponsored by Signal Oil.

Being a long running West Coast show, The Whistler drew much of its talent from what was known by many as Hollywood’s Radio Row. Several of the performers provided the voices for the doomed and dastardly on The Whistler over the years so often that they became known as “Whistler’s children.” This list included such notables as Mercedes McCambridge, Joan Banks, Jeff Chandler, Jeanette Nolan, Frank Lovejoy, John McIntire, Gloria Blondell, Donald Woods, Lurene Tuttle, Gerald Mohr, Hans Conried, John Brown, Wally Maher, Cathy and Elliot Lewis, Joseph Kearns, and Betty Lou Gerson.

Experience the weird justice of The Whistler in this astounding Radio Archives collection. Listen to twelve broadcasts in The Whistler Volume 13, restored to sparkling digital quality and as originally aired in 1946 and 1947.
