Description

Gunsmoke
Volume 8

Around Dodge City and in the territory on west -- there’s just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers -- and that’s with a U.S. Marshall and the smell of “Gunsmoke”! “Gunsmoke” starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that moved west with young America -- and the story of a man who moved with it. I’m that man, Matt Dillon, United States Marshall -- the first man they look for and the last they want to meet. It’s a chancy job -- and it makes a man watchful...and a little lonely.

The Gunsmoke theme is considered by many to be one of the most renowned pieces of music of classic radio themes.  Rex Koury was hired to provide the music for the program, and while having experience on a variety of radio shows, Koury had never composed for a western before.  As a matter of practice, Koury wrote the music for the show itself first, openers and bridges and the like, then he would write the theme, tying it all together.  According to Koury, he wrote the Gunsmoke theme the morning of the show’s first broadcast, after oversleeping, in ten minutes.

One of the keys to the success of Gunsmoke most definitely was character development.  With a concept built around basically four key cast members and a continual flow of other characters in and out each week, Gunsmoke endeared itself to its audience by allowing that core cast to grow over the years.  Although originally conceived to be a ‘Philip Marlowe of the West,” Matt Dillon grew less hard-boiled and more compassionate and understanding. Portrayed early on much like a buzzard waiting for people to die, Doc Adams also evolved, maturing into a man dedicated to his work.

5 of 5 The Creative Talents Behind Gunsmoke.... May 28, 2022
Reviewer: Richard McLeod from RIVERSIDE, CA United States
With the talents of William "Bill" Conrad, combined with the writing talent of John Meston, the supporting cast of Parley Baer, Howard McNear, Georgia Ellis and the musical talent of Rex Koury, how could the success of a radio program not succeed?  The development of the characters quickly came about since the inception of Gunsmoke in April of 1952.  The backing of CBS with Director Norman MacDonald only enhanced the chances of a successful radio show. The Radio Archives staff has restored episodes of Gunsmoke utilizing the best techniques available today and such is quite evident when comparing the restoration work at Radio Archives to what else is available from other sources. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
