Description

The Great Gildersleeve
Volume 6

Hal Peary’s portrayal of Gildersleeve proved to be so popular and endearing to radio audiences that Johnson’s Wax – the sponsor of Fibber McGee and Molly – decided to take a chance on both Peary and the character he portrayed to sponsor and create an audition show for the proposed The Great Gildersleeve radio series. In a fortunate bit of timing, Kraft Foods was looking to sponsor a radio show which would feature its new food product – Parkay margarine spread. Kraft liked the audition show, and The Great Gildersleeve went on to enjoy a 16-year-run on the airwaves.

Gildersleeve underwent a bit of a metamorphosis when he left the pleasant town of Wistful Vista for greener pastures of Summerfield. Gildersleeve’s long mentioned, long suffering, but unseen wife disappeared and he became a bachelor who was looking for his soul mate. His abrasive personality was also toned down quite a bit. At the start of the series, Gildersleeve owned a girdle manufacturing company in Wistful Vista whose motto was: “If you want a better corset, of course, it’s a Gildersleeve.” He would later become Summerfield’s water commissioner, with all past references to his former business no longer being mentioned.

Like all bachelors of the era who suddenly found themselves caring for their orphaned niece and nephew, Gildersleeve depended on a housekeeper and cook to keep things running smoothly. Birdie Lee Coggins was the solid motherly foundation upon which Gildersleeve depended on to keep things running smooth. During the first season, Birdie was stereotyped into being less intelligent than everyone around her, but under the direction of new writers in the second season, listeners soon delighted in discovering that Birdie was actually the real brains and mastermind in the Gildersleeve household.

So sit back and enjoy the twelve original broadcasts offered in this collection and presented exactly as broadcast, complete with commercials for Kraft Foods.
