Amos 'n' Andy
Volume 10

The focus of storytelling on Amos ’n’ Andy in its half hour format stood out in several ways. While the previous incarnation of the show relied on drama as much as comedy and ran in a serial format, the new program was made up of self-contained thirty-minute episodes. Also, quick comedy gags and one-liners became the spine of the show, aimed at not only moving the program along, but getting the live studio audience to laugh as much as possible. Another addition to the show had been a full orchestra and chorus.

As George “Kingfish” Stevens became the focus of the program during its sitcom period, the title characters had to find different roles to fill. Originally basically Andy’s sidekick, Amos grew in wisdom while his role became less and less in the half hour version of the program. Amos saw Kingfish for what he was, basically a con man out for himself, and attempted to keep Andy out of trouble. Andy also changed positions, becoming more gullible, much more of an idiot type character played solely for laughs and as the Kingfish’s dunce than ever before. Not that this was a total change for Andy, more so it was simply another way the lead characters of the program now took on secondary roles.

Even with the alterations, however, one thing that did not seem to falter was the show’s popularity with the listening public. Oftentimes the number one show on the air well into the 1950s, running neck and neck often with Jack Benny, Amos ’n’ Andy not only continued to make radio audiences tune in each week and howl with laughter. The radio program remained one of the top three listened to programs until its last program in this version aired in 1955.

The twelve episodes in Amos ’n’ Andy Volume 10, restored to sparkling audio quality, prove why the show was so popular and still resonates with fans today.
