Only one man was powerful enough and wise enough to stop this wholesale murder — Richard Wentworth, champion of oppressed humanity, better known as the Spider. And the Spider was engaged in the bitterest battle of his career, fighting the Avenger, a false, wily crusader who was determined to destroy him!
 
Norvell W. Page, writing under the pseudonym of Grant Stockbridge, Page remade the Spider into his own psychic twin, often dressing up as the Master of Men when delivering his monthly manuscripts.
 
In a letter to a Spider fan, Page wrote, “Think of me as Wentworth, if you will. The line between us is not too distinct.”
 
Page took Spider readers on a roller-coaster ride of wild action and fevered emotion unlike anything ever published before or since. Once he got going, Page painted a portrait of a tortured superhero, one much more emblematic of the 21st century than of the Great Depression.
 
For Richard Wentworth saw himself as a man on a holy mission, a self-appointed messiah with a martyr complex. A Christ covered in cobwebs. He was the champion of oppressed humanity, its shield and protector against the murderous outbreaks of the Underworld; wherever crime struck terribly, that way he hastened, taking up the challenge. The police had offered rewards totaling thousands of dollars for his capture “dead or alive.” And the Underworld hated him, and plotted his destruction with a fierceness bred of abject terror.

Nick Santa Maria Nick was born early in life in Brooklyn, NY. His theatrical background is based in Comedy Improv. He was a long standing member of the late lamented Miami based, Mental Floss, where he served as head writer/composer. From there he began his career in commercials, voice-overs, TV, Film, and theatre. He has performed in many roles on the stage including his award winning turn as Nick in Over The River And Through The Woods, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, as Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls, in The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee as Mr. Panch (3-D Theatricals), Mr. Bromhead in No Sex Please, We’re British at The Norris, and as Pseudolus in, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Norris Theatre. Television: The Buffalo Bill Show, B.J. Stryker, and two Disney Christmas Specials. Off Broadway: Writer/Composer/Performer on Secrets Every Smart Traveler Should Know, Soundtrack on RCA Victor. Broadway: Vince Fontaine in Tommy Tune’s production of Grease. He also appeared in every domestic company of Mel Brooks’ The Producers, understudying everyone from Nathan Lane and Jason Alexander, to Tony Danza and David Hassellhoff. He was the original Genie in Disney’s Aladdin, a Musical Spectacular, soundtrack on Disney Records. Nick is a resident of Los Angeles and is currently writing a book about classic film comedians, Nick’s been a long time film historian, and has written several articles on the topic.

There certainly is a great deal of mayhem in this Spider adventure. It is also an important one in the Spider canon because of the fate of Jackson, the Spider's chauffer. The audio book is first class, but this one did not quite gel with me. Still, even a mid-range Spider adventure is better than most novels featuring anyone else.

as finished listening to "The Spider #17 - The Pain Emperor" released by Radio Archives.
Mom and Dad always loved listening to the gritty and nerve-wrecking adventures of The Spider - who always takes a no-holds-barred, no prisoners approach to fighting crime.  Let's face it, anybody who fights crime is a bit psychotic themselves and Richard Wentworth does go way over the edge of sanity at times in his never ending battle to protect humanity.  
Yet this time, The Spider is up against a criminal mastermind, who is pretending to be a masked hero fighting against crime calling himself the Avenger - a masked pretend hero is intent on squashing The Spider under his booted heel.
Spoiler Alert - the Spider does pay a heavy price in this adventure for his freedom.
Strongly Recommended!

as always, great! I play these while driving in my car and sometimes I just waste gas so I drive no particular place just to listen to
