The Spider #84 Audiobook
Master of the Night-Demons
by Emile C. Tepperman writing as Grant Stockbridge
Read by Nick Santa Maria

Just as Adolph Hitler brutally slaughtered his opponents, so did Asmodeus, Master of the Night-Demons, crush New York’s police force and lay down his hideous ultimatum to the city: “Surrender... or die!” Could one man — Richard Wentworth — with only his pitifully few loyal allies, and the Spider’s sinister garb, stem this monstrous Blitzkrieg of crime!

The Spider seemed to rejoice in impossible odds. Captured by a modern-day buccaneer in one epic, Wentworth shrugged off the mood of black despair which often came over him when defeat seemed imminent:

One man against more than a hundred pirates, of course, a hundred killers. The Spider knew that, but it did not check the wild impulse to laughter that squeezed his lungs. It was no wonder that men call the Spider mad!

Yes, no wonder at all.

Once, during a respite in a typical carnage of urban combat, Police Commissioner Kirkpatrick ticked off a long list of suspects. Wentworth blurted out this self-revealing truth. “I’m suspicious of everyone,” he admitted, “even of myself sometimes.” And well he should be. For Richard Wentworth was an undiagnosed manic-depressive—if not paranoid schizophrenic—subject to violent mood swings. When the Spider-madness came over him, he might pick up his treasured Stradivarius violin and launch into a night-long serenade to soul-searching. Or, he might putty up his face, don black hat and cape, go out Spidering.…
