Author Robert J. Hogan wrote G-8 and His Battle Aces for ten years. What makes this accomplishment even more intriguing is that Hogan wrote every single adventure of America’s Master Spy. This was rare in the Pulp industry, as long running series usually ended up having at least two authors, if not more, because writers had to be spelled from time to time or had other projects. Hogan, however, piloted G-8 through every single adventure.
Driving through the Holland Tunnel in 1933, Hogan crafted the basics of G-8 and his war torn world while caught in traffic. He took the name from a ranch in Colorado where he’d spent a summer, actually flying for his first time on a plane for that trip. That singular trip, according to some, led to Hogan’s lifelong interest in flying. G-8 would be the only name America’s Master Spy would ever have.
G-8 was also not the only spy to work in his stories. His girlfriend, a nurse who had the designation R-1, was also an agent of the government. Much like her flying boyfriend, R-1’s true name was never revealed. Although not frequently in the stories, she made the most of her appearances, actively committing espionage and even using her own disguise skills at times.
