Many writers contributed to The Whistler’s long run of episodes. Radio, especially for an anthology series, was a fertile ground for freelancers, either writers who made their living solely from writing for various radio programs or those who simply needed to fill in an empty place in their writing calendar or make a few extra bucks. In the first two years of The Whistler, J. Donald Wilson acted as both producer and primary writer. Once George Allen came on board as director in 1944, he became the driving force and utilized several different writers for the programs. Final scripts, however, were largely produced by Harold Swanton and Joel Malone.

What is evident, however, is how every writer added to the character, The Whistler would become. Although other shows had similar host/narrator type characters, only The Whistler was eerily omniscient and philosophical.

Comparisons have been drawn between The Whistler and another similar character, The Shadow. Both initially have their origins as narrators for crime centered radio anthology shows, The Shadow hosting Detective Story Hour before helming his own program. Although no real physical description was given to The Whistler, the aspects of the character on the radio program lend themselves to the same sort of image The Shadow casts; a dark figure in cloak and hat watching from the shadows, waiting for crime to be committed, for death to come. While The Shadow, however, went on to fight crime, The Whistler was quite pleased simply to continue observing and sharing it with listeners.

I started collecting about 40 years ago on reels of tapes. Some were The Whistler. I decided to try the new The Whistler when RADIO ARCHIVES came out with Volume 1, (I now have all 10) The reels are in the trash can now. I now only buy old radio shows from RADIO ARCHIVES, the sound of there shows are perfect. If you are just starting, The Whistler and Doc Savage are good shows and sound is the best...
