Gunsmoke for me has been like traveling in time. Especially in the eps where there is no narration. The story is told by the dialogue and the sound FX. It's like being there.

I hope Radio Archives continues to produce Gunsmoke collections running right up to the final episode on June 18, 1961. The Gunsmoke radio program was one of the finest achievements in American broadcasting. Thanks for the excellent sound quality.

Modern TV Conventions Slowly Creeping In

I've personally always found radio's Gunsmoke to be far superior to the more famous TV incarnation and this is another top notch set from RA.
The only complaint I have has to do with the show itself the further along in years it gets. It's somewhat fascinating to listen as we gradually make our way into the late 50's and see how the times are already changing.
Announcer-read commercials are gradually replaced by "catchy jingle" ads repeated ad nauseum and the increase in ad time resulting in the narrative portion being cut down significantly.
I'm reminded of watching through seasons of "The Simpsons" and gradually realizing the the further along you go, the episodes start to shrink down from 24 or 25 minutes in length to roughly 20.
It's still great quality and some of the best radio ever produced, but it's a little disheartening to witness the steady decline as dramatic radio was starting to come to it's inevitable end.
