Suspense which aired its first episode in 1942, was one of the longest running radio programs during the Golden Age of Radio. It was one of the few radio programs that had a 20-year or more run.

Quality generally attracts quality — and so Suspense soon began to attract Hollywood stars to its microphones. But here as well, William Spier differed from his radio colleagues. He knew that name talent would undoubtedly attract listeners, but he also knew that most movie actors and actresses had very seldom been given the chance to really flex their acting muscles on the air. Appearances on such series as Hollywood Hotel, Screen Guild, and The Lux Radio Theatre usually meant recreating a previous film role and chatting personably with a host or hostess. But on Suspense, such stars as Robert Young, Gene Kelly, Cary Grant, Eddie Bracken, and Van Johnson would truly have to prove their mettle, frequently in roles that cast them against type. This wasn’t, however, stunt casting - the notion of, say, a screen villain like Laird Cregar or Vincent Price playing a romantic lead or Lucille Ball or Virginia Bruce being menaced just for the sake of publicity. Hollywood stars were required to deliver the same intense performances as their radio-based co-stars — and most not only delivered but were thrilled by the opportunity to do so. Enthusiastic participant Cary Grant, for example, was frequently quoted as saying that, if he ever did any additional radio work, it would be on Suspense, “where I get a chance to act!”

Very few shows are as fondly remembered as one that left listeners sitting on the edge of their seats, biting their nails and even a bit afraid at times. Suspense provided its audience with not only chills, thrills, action and adventure, but also expertly written stories and some of the finest performances given by radio’s best actors, as you will hear in Suspense, Volume 8 from Radio Archives.

A special Volume of SUSPENSE..........	May 28, 2022

Volume 8 of SUSPENSE is a special one for this unique radio program. Each episode stars a major motion picture star in an exceptionally written story. Academy Award winning stars such as Olivia de Havilland, Paul Muni and many others such as Lucille Ball, Herbert Marshall, Keenan Wynn, Merle Oberon, Gene Kelly, Dame Mae Whittey, Donald Crisp, John Loder, Reginald Gardiner, Agnes Moorehead, Ray Collins, Maureen O'Sullivan and many others fill this Volume with some of possibly the best stories ever written for SUSPENSE. I can't recommend this volume too highly! The Radio Archives staff has again restored these programs with a tonal and audio clarity that surpasses when they were aired. Each volume has unique and colorful artwork, typical of the period on the cover of each set If you like SUSPENSE, don't miss this very special Volume No. 8.
