“And now...another tale well-calculated to keep you in...SUSPENSE!”
“If I ever do any more radio work, I want to it on Suspense, where I get a good chance to act,” Cary Grant was quoted as saying back in 1943. Grant’s great love for Suspense was due to William Spier. Spier was chief of the writers’ department and director of development at CBS in 1940. As co-producer of Suspense, Spier developed the show’s thriller/chiller/macabre genre into a formula with human drama that attracted the finest of Hollywood’s elite as well as the cream of radio’s great actors – including Grant, Orson Welles, and many others.
American music composer Wilbur Hatch was responsible for creating much of the music heard on Suspense. After a stint as a pianist at Chicago radio station KYW, Hatch went on to work as a conductor and music director for CBS.
But as Suspense grew in popularity and began to attract a more upscale acting clientele anxious to participate in “radio’s outstanding theater of thrills,” finding someone to pick up the weekly tab became a top priority for CBS. Luckily, in December 2, 1943, the series found its ‘angel’ in the sponsorship of Roma Wines. Suspense’s long association with Roma (and co-branded Cresta Blanca) was good for both the series and the company; a bigger budget attracted bigger guest stars and, as the program began to climb in the ratings, the company began to enjoy substantial profits.
Suspense, Volume 9 presents six hours of this radio classic restored to the finest audio quality possible! Tremendous storytelling coupled with finely crafted action and production value is what awaits you on Suspense, Volume 9 from Radio Archives.
