Out of the night comes a menacing winged figure! Blind district attorney Tony Quinn takes his battle for justice from the courtrooms to the streets, battling evil as The Black Bat!
Battling valiantly against sabotage, wholesale murder, and espionage, the nocturnal champion of the victims of crime flies into the valley of death — ready to fight grim traitors’ bullet for bullet and blow for blow! Once more The Black Bat spreads his wings and goes forth to combat treachery!
A Pulp hero having companions was not new in 1939. What makes the trio that joined The Black Bat in his assault on evil somewhat different is that it was unusual for a hero’s team to have such varied backgrounds and not necessarily be geniuses or experts in multiple fields.
A criminal, Norton “Silk” Kirby found his way to the right side of the law fully thanks to Tony Quinn. Trying to rob Quinn before he was blinded, Silk found himself given a chance to reform. Silk became invaluable when Quinn was stricken blind. He proved just as useful when the former District Attorney regained his sight and set out to exact his own kind of justice. Silk’s knowledge of the underworld as well as many of the skills he’d learned when a part of it proved very useful in The Black Bat’s adventures.
A hero in his own right, Butch O’Leary caught Quinn’s attention when he saved innocent bystanders from being gunned down, nearly costing him his own life. Most definitely the muscle of The Black Bat’s allies, O’Leary is also fiercely loyal to the Bat and his mission.
Carol Baldwin’s father provided Tony Quinn the chance to regain his sight by donating his eyes when he died. Carol proved to not only be valuable to The Black Bat’s battle against crime, but also served enough as a sort of love interest to provide a different kind of tension to the adventures.
Thrill to The Black Bat’s Spy Trail, originally published in Black Book Detective #38 March 1940 and read with two fisted excitement by award winning voice actor Milton Bagby.
