The Green Ghost Detective Audiobook
#4 The Case of the Laughing Corpse
by G.T. Fleming-Roberts
Read by Roger Price

Magic meets mystery as George Chance battles crime as the Green Ghost! Thrills, legerdemain, and suspense — all courtesy of the most extraordinary man-hunter the world has ever known!

The Green Ghost, master of magic, plays danger’s game when a dead man’s hate wreaks havoc on the living! Murder calls the super-detective to action when keys of doom unlock the doors of crime!

The Green Ghost was not creator G. T. Fleming-Roberts’ only crime solving magician character. Prior to George Chance taking the pulp stage, Fleming-Roberts had already written the adventures of Diamondstone the Magician, a hero who did not bother with a mask. After the Green Ghost took his final bow, Fleming-Roberts would return to that sort of stage wizard turned crime buster in the Jeffrey Wren series. A possible explanation for his fascination with this type of character exists. Notable for his mysteries in the pulp field, Fleming-Roberts preferred a near common ‘Average Joe’ hero to the more perfect, highly trained, almost unbelievable types that other companies focused on. Even though his readers were not likely all magicians, Roberts wanted The Green Ghost and other mystery solvers to be more down to earth, to be someone a fan might see on the street or share a drink with.

The idea of making his work relatable to readers extended to the villains that The Green Ghost and others faced as well. In an article in the Indianapolis Star Magazine, Fleming-Roberts stated, “The menace nowadays has to be something common and familiar… Adults are reading the magazines – kids dropped them in favor of comic books – and you can’t scare grownup mystery readers with a slinking figure in a black cape or a nasty old clutching hand.” This is clearly evident in the street level crime The Green Ghost confronts in his stories.

The Case of the Laughing Corpse was originally published in the pages of The Ghost Detective magazine in the Fall of 1940 and is read with mysterious and magical force by Roger Price.
