In efforts to get a share of the pulp hero market of the mid to late 1930s, Thrilling Publications, also known as Standard Magazine, recruited authors to create characters that could carry their own magazines and compete with the likes of Doc Savage and The Shadow. Although editors at Thrilling relied primarily on Norman Daniels for most of these series, they also turned their attention to writer G.T. Fleming-Roberts, bringing him on board to create the lead character for The Ghost Super Detective Magazine.
Flemings-Roberts was the ideal choice for the series that would become The Green Ghost for a number of reasons. First, he already had contributed to pulp series, including one all his own, Diamondstone The Magician. This meant that Fleming-Roberts not only knew how to pace a story for a recurring character, but also was familiar with the challenges of meeting deadlines and pleasing editors.
The primary reason, however, that The Green Ghost was a great fit for G.T. Flemings-Roberts is that the majority of the author’s over 300 stories written for Pulps were detective tales and mysteries. This means that not only did he craft a masked hero to compete with the likes of The Spider and even Standard’s own Phantom Detective, but Fleming-Roberts wrote stories that were also usually tightly conceived and structured mysteries. This drew in readers who enjoyed well written mysteries as well as masked hero adventures.
The Case of the Walking Skeleton was originally published in the pages of The Green Ghost Detective magazine in the Spring of 1941 and is read with mysterious and magical force by Roger Price.
