The similarities between The Phantom, as he was referred to in the pages of The Phantom Detective Magazine, and The Shadow are several and fairly obvious. Both were men of wealth and both had spent time, it would be revealed, overseas in various battles of all sorts. Returning home, they found themselves confronted with a city and even country in the grip of crime and, using their vast resources, they each took on the mantle of crime fighter in order to bring right and justice to the world. Both concealed their identities in various ways. The Shadow utilized a slouch hat and crimson scarf to hide his features while The Phantom wore a mask, although he never donned the top hat he is so associated with, thanks largely to the way artists portrayed him on magazine covers. Even their names have a certain similarity, both taking on identities that are ghost like, mysterious, and even slightly scary sounding. Also, each hero worked with a group, although The Shadow’s agents were more defined like a team than The Phantom’s helpers. Even with that, each had a cast of supporting characters that reoccurred frequently, making each character’s mission not solely a one-man operation, even though authors loved to claim that the characters were each a lone wolf type. This proved truer, in the final analysis, with the Phantom Detective than The Shadow.

Milton Bagby is a veteran radio announcer and voiceover specialist who first turned to audiobooks in 2010. Since then, Milton has worked on several hundred audiobook projects and is a 2017 Audie Awards winner, the audiobook industry's highest award. Drawing upon years of stage acting and the occasional bit part in films, Milton uses his experience to create characters that stand out in the ear of the listener.
