Most everyone today knows what an ‘oldies show’ on the radio means, that music from thirty years or more ago is going to be played and, if the hosts of the program are on their game, lively discussion of the spotlighted music usually ensues. Although this has become a pretty standard format, in the mid-1950s and early 60s, no one was really focusing on the old songs from the early 20th and even into the late 19th Century on the radio. That is, no one except Andy and Virginia Mansfield on Turn Back The Clock.
Considered by some to be the first oldies radio program, Turn Back the Clock ran on Armed Forces Radio from 1955 to 1962. Helmed by the Mansfields, a couple with their own show business background which included experience in music on many levels over twenty plus years, the program introduced several innovations that later shows of this type would copy and evolve. The first aspect of the program that set a tone yet to be heard on radio was its basic format, that of playing songs recorded in the past, some as far back as the era of cylinders instead of vinyl. Even though some of the songs had a long life and had been recorded in various forms by different performers, Turn Back the Clock also featured long ago hits that their current listeners had likely never heard.
The fact that Turn Back the Clock had two hosts also added a bit of originality to the already very innovative program. Andy and Virginia Mansfield were in no way the first pair to co-host a program, nor were they even the first married couple to do so. They were, however, most likely the first co-hosts of an oldies show and the division of duties that listeners typically hear in a program like this was quite evident.
