Whether one considers X Minus One a revival of Dimension X or its own program that happened to utilize a few scripts from its predecessor, it is clear that NBC wanted to introduce something new to science fiction radio with this series. Other genres had already experienced a renaissance of sorts on radio, blossoming from often juvenile audiences and cliché’ archetypes into dramas, mysteries, and even comedies aimed at broader, more adult tastes. Programs such as Dragnet and Gunsmoke, among others, set the tone for shows that reached a more varied demographic. It obviously only made sense to the executives at NBC that a science fiction program designed with the same sensibilities would prove successful. After Dimension X came and went, the studio seemed to hit its stride, at least creatively with X Minus One, producing one of the best loved series by radio fans.
Where NBC did not necessarily take advantage of this series was in promoting it. Although lauded in its own time as innovative and seemingly loved by listeners, X Minus One never got the advertising support or promotional effort from NBC that other series did. According to many experts, this was largely because NBC believed that it wasn’t on the studio to promote the series, but actually the responsibility of the magazine publishers also associated with it. With many of the episodes being adaptations from Astounding Science Fiction and Galaxy Magazines, studio executives apparently felt as if they were doing the publications a favor by adapting their tales, so they left the promotion of the series to them. This is likely responsible for the show only lasting a little over two years, even though it was expertly produced and revolutionary in many ways.
